Driver arrested for drunk driving after crashing into tree

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe police have released video showing the aftermath of a crash blamed on drunk driving.

On Thursday, just before 12:30 in the morning, officers arrived at Arroyo Nambe and County Road 119N to investigate a possible impaired driver. The driver has crossed into the wrong lane and crashed into a large tree.

According to a police report, the driver, Matthew Miller, had “the smell of an intoxicating beverage coming from his breath” and was also “slurring his speech.”

Miller told authorities he had two 12 oz. Tecate beers with dinner a couple hours earlier. He also said “he was traveling towards a friend’s house when he swerved to avoid a dog that was sitting in the roadway.”

Miller told investigators he was going about 20 miles per hour at the time, but that’s something investigators dispute.

He was booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility on driving under the influence and careless driving. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
