Dr. Christopher Witt, Associate Professor and Curator of the Birds Department at the University of New Mexico has some impressive news about hummingbirds in high altitudes.

His department has been studying the amount of oxygen needed by these feathered friends and the results will air tonight as part of Nature on New Mexico PBS.

As Dr. Witt says, the diversity of hummingbirds is quite impressive here in New Mexico.  However, the global diversity of the bird is downright astounding.  Dr. Witt’s research found that attitudinal differences can cause great genetic differences between the birds, influencing size, color and biological needs.

In addition to Nature, the findings will be published tomorrow in Science magazine.  For more information on “Super Hummingbirds” visit New Mexico PBS.
