ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Elijah Lilly made the most of his first game returning kicks for the University of New Mexico Lobos. That effort has earned him Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week Honors. Lilly had four returns, averaging 40 yards each. Three of those returns lead to touchdowns in the Lobos 45-40 victory over Air Force last Saturday.
“He’s electric,” said head Lobos head coach Bob Davie. “He’s one of those guys. He’s a corner but he’s 150 pounds right now or 155 pounds. We need him at corner but, we may have to find a way to get his hands on the football. He is one of those guys where you say, hey that guy has another gear. I think we all see it.”
Lilly has 160 return yards after only one game and that leads the Lobos in that particular category. The freshman made his Lobo debut against Boise State a couple of weeks ago. The 3-3 Lobos host Louisiana-Monroe Saturday.
