Family of man who drove his car over three trains speaks out

BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) – Tuesday, Belen Police identified the driver that jumped over three trains in Belen last week as 42 year old, Anthony Sanchez.

The family says that despite some speculation, Sanchez was not trying to kill himself when he sped down the dead-end road last week.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I couldn’t see how this person is still alive. It’s a miracle, I hope he does make it,” said Christine Martinez, the owner of Curbside Towing.

A miracle is what Anthony Sanchez’s family is calling it after he drove his car down Baca at speeds up to 100 mph, before hitting a small embankment.

Sanchez’s car launched at least 20 feet in the air, flying over a ditch, a fence, and three trains, until it finally hit the ground more than 100 feet away.

The force of the crash was so great, the tires on the car flew off. The car’s roof also caved in above his head. Somehow, he survived.

KRQE News 13 reached out to his family who tell us he remains in intensive care. When we asked them what he was doing that day, they told us he had been going through a hard time with a trauma in the family.

In a statement, family members told us: “Anthony was not trying to kill himself. He had a psychotic episode and it’s a miracle he’s still alive. We request prayers for his recovery.”

“In my mind, I’ve never seen anything like this and so it’s just hard to imagine how it happened,” said Deputy Chief Robert Miller of Belen Police Department.

Belen Police say the investigation is ongoing and they’re waiting for blood test results to see if Sanchez was drunk or high at the time. They say if his tests come back clean, he might face simple traffic charges since no one else was hurt.

Belen Police say it could take up to six weeks for those test results to come back. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
