SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A Santa Fe teen who violently shook his five-week old baby will spend a year in juvenile jail.
Javier Chavez was 17 when he was arrested last year.
He told police he took the baby’s teen mother to school and was overwhelmed with his son’s crying.
The baby was later hospitalized after a family member noticed he was purple and gasping for air.
A CT scan showed the infant had signs of shaken baby syndrome.
Chavez was charged as an adult, but under a plea agreement he will spend a year at Youth Diagnostic Development Center in Albuquerque.
The baby is said to be doing fine.
