Series of wrong-way drivers on I-25 concern Santa Fe residents

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Another arrest of a wrong-way driver this past weekend on I-25 near Santa Fe makes three in just a few weeks and now people are worried.

Santa Fe residents told KRQE News 13 exits along I-25 like Cerrillos and Old Pecos Trail can get confusing at night.

Clinton Grant was caught exiting Old Pecos Trail Saturday night, police say he was drunk. Just last month, a woman was driving the wrong way near Old Pecos Trail when she hit 22-year old Anton Gress, killing him and herself.

Also last month, a young woman caught driving the wrong way near Cerrillos and was pulled over and arrested for a DWI before anyone could get hurt.

The series of wrong-way drivers is getting the attention of Santa Fe Mayor, Javier Gonzales.

In a letter to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, Mayor Gonzales brings attention to the recent incidents. He suggested technology to alert drivers when a vehicle is moving in the wrong direction, improved pavement markings, and illuminated or flashing signage.

The Department of Transportation responded by saying while it doesn’t see any deficiencies, signage and striping at these ramps could be modified to further enhance the visibility.

Santa Fe residents say many of these exits are confusing even when sober.

“We bring my children to school every morning and going through that route, there’s so much traffic but I can see how it’s hard to determine which is the right exit to take,” said Jerome Salazar.

“I’ve definitely been on Old Pecos Trail and I did get confused,” said Jeannine Fortier.

KRQE News 13 reached out to the Department of Transportation asking if there are plans to make any changes. A spokesperson said they are looking into upgrading the signs in those areas.
