DURANGO, COLO. (KRQE) – A week after Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta wrapped up, another festival for flyers made its debut just a few hours north.
This year marked the inaugural Animas Valley Balloon Rally in Durango. The rally was made possible by volunteers and various local sponsors, including the Durango-Silverton Railroad.
Organizers say it attracted thousands of spectators, with a balloon glow Friday night, a mass ascension Saturday morning, and a launch Sunday from the field north of town.
This year 15 pilots took part, with at least 10 launching every morning. There was one special shape balloon with Humpty-Dumpty making an appearance.
Organizers are optimistic the event will attract many more in the years to come, with hopes of having at least 25 balloonists next year.
While this is Durango’s first fall balloon fest, there’s also an annual winter event with balloons called Snow-Down that takes place in February.
