New park being built next to International UFO Museum

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – An eyesore that sat next to one of the most popular places in New Mexico is getting a makeover.

There was some debate about what should be built next to the International UFO Museum since it’s the center of town; a park won out.

The museum is easily Roswell’s biggest tourist attraction, but for years now the dirt lot right next to the museum has been anything but attractive.

Now the museum, which owns that property, is doing something about it.

“The board decided that you know it would be a great idea to have something just open and green,” said Jim Hill, executive director of the museum.

So they decided to build a park.

“It’s gonna have pathways for people to walk through it and some benches around the central area of the park and a lot of trees,” said Hill.

A big reason the museum decided to build the $100,000 park is because of the location.

“It’s a very large intersection, a very busy intersection and if you pass through the city you’re going to pass by that and it really hopefully dresses up downtown,” said Hill.

The International UFO Museum is the second most popular museum in New Mexico.

Often the parking lot is packed. There was talk of using the vacant land for another parking lot but the museum believes that in some ways the limited parking is good for the city.

“They may park three blocks from here  but that’s what we want them to do. We want them going up and down Main Street,” said Hill.

However, the museum also built an employee lot next to the park that should up more spaces for visitors in the main lot.

The museum director says the park should be finished by the end of the month.
