SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Convicted cop killer Andrew Romero is facing new criminal charges.

Romero has now been indicted on a series of robberies he allegedly committed before the shooting death of Rio Rancho Police Officer Gregg Benner last year.

Romero was being held at MDC to face those charges in Bernalillo County when guards found two sharp, metal objects and heroin hidden in his cell.

Romero told officers he brought the shanks from prison. He is now charged for the shanks and drugs.

Romero is serving a life sentence at the State Pen in Santa Fe.
