App developed in Albuquerque providing access to dozens of gyms

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – You’ve heard it before, there’s an app for that. But what if there’s an app to help you get signed up for a unique gym membership, that will get in the doors of gyms across the metro?

We’ve all been there, trying out one gym, after another, after another, in an attempt to find the perfect class to shed those unwanted pounds.

Just when you think you’ve narrowed it down and have signed another contract, you find out a different gym is offering a class you really wanted to join and now you’re stuck.

Before you fork out all of that extra cash, a local man has a solution.

“You either spend all of that money and get all these memberships. Or, you go through FitMix and you have one membership,” said Kevin Mathis, founder.

FitMix is giving members unlimited access to gyms throughout Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. Right now, 22 gyms and counting are taking part in FitMix. By joining, you can sign up for any of the classes at the gyms.

“You can do CrossFit. You have kettlebells. You can do some high intensity workouts over at the Hit Fit Club. We have a lot of yoga options, Pilates, and basically everything there is we have in our network,” said Mathis.

Now, with the touch of a finger, the app is connecting people to dozens of gyms and classes they may have never tried before.

It took Mathis a year and a half to develop the app right here in Albuquerque. He then went door to door to get gyms on board. Fortunately for him, that was the easy part.

In turn it’s helping these local businesses boost their membership. Firebellz and Big Barn CrossFit both say the decision to join was a no-brainer.

‘As their clientele grows, we get more exposure and membership. Then in the long run, we may get memberships out of it also, so it’s mutually beneficial, in my belief,” said Zar Horton, co-owner of Firebellz.

“Our goal is to build community around fitness and exercise so the more people we can reach the better,” said Jonathan Smith, owner of Big Barn CrossFit.

Mathis hopes to expand the app to include personal training, nutrition, discounts to health stores and make it more social. Those additions should be added within the next year.
