Viral Albuquerque video sparks debate

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s one of the most viewed Facebook videos out of New Mexico; it shows a young woman at an Albuquerque gas station clearly out of her mind and harassing a man.

However, it’s what the man did or didn’t do that has sparked a real debate across social media.

The man posted the five minute video to Facebook last Friday night and it already has more than six million views and a lot of people arguing over what should have happened.

During a quick fill up at the Smith’s gas station just off Coors and Central, a woman, who looks to be under the influence of something, walks up to a man and starts to harass him. At first, the man, who recorded the incident on his cell phone seemed concerned.

“What’s wrong with you sweetie? Do you want me to call the paramedics or something?” he asked.

He also asked for her name, but she ignored him and instead hopped in his car through the passenger side window.

At one point she even broke off a piece of his car radio. He threatens to have his sisters beat her up. The woman finally got out. Then he tries to lecture her.

“You need to get your life straight,” the man said. “Don’t jump in a random guy’s car. You’re lucky I’m not one of those f***** who would take you home.”

Minutes into the video you can hear a clerk from the gas station ask if the woman is with him.

“No,” the man replied.

The video has sparked a massive debate on Facebook.

Some people have said the man should have done more to help and should have called 911. Some people are wondering if the woman is okay.

“Don’t take advantage of the situation and I think he did by recording her,” Jana Pfeiffer said. “It’s really unfortunate to portray women in that way so I think he could have done a lot of things different.”

Others said he did nothing wrong by taking out his cell phone to record the incident and that it isn’t his job to take care of a stranger.

KRQE News 13 also reached out to the Smith’s to see if anyone called police or an ambulance that night, we never heard back.
