World War II veteran finally gets high school diploma

TAYLOR, Pa. (CNN) – A man who left school to fight in World War II finally got his high school diploma.

George Fricovsky and his grandson, David Walsh, both got emotional on Tuesday when Walsh presented him with a diploma from Riverside High School in Taylor, Pennsylvania.

Walsh is a vice principal in the same school district that his grandfather left in 1944 to fight in World War II.

His family invited him to a board meeting where he thought he was going to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Instead, they presented him with his diploma. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
