Santa Fe Sheriff’s deputies arrest wrong-way driver

Diana Nunez-Montes

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over a wrong-way driver on I-25 Sunday who they suspect was drunk.

Diana Nunez-Montes, 23, was stopped at about 3 a.m. near Cerrillos Road.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, deputies had received several calls about the wrong-way driver headed north in the southbound lanes of I-25. They say Nunez-Montes smelled of alcohol.

About two weeks ago, a suspected drunk driver killed someone while driving the wrong way in that same area.

Clara Avina, 44, hit 23-year-old Anton Gress head on, causing both their cars to erupt in flames. Avina’s family told police she had been drinking that night.

As for Nunez-Montes, she’s already out of jail after posting a $1,500 bond. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
