Old Route 66 gets modern-day exposure online

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s been more than two months since the launch, and the city says its new digital endeavor is working to boost business up and down Central Avenue.

The ABQ66.com website comes during a period of change on historic Route 66.

Gilbert Montano, chief of staff for the City of Albuquerque, said, “There are a lot of things on Central that I would imagine even people who live there their whole lives don’t know exist.”

“You don’t want something constant there because businesses aren’t staying constant. You can update with coupons. You can update with different specials running in the Route 66 corridor,” he said.

ABQ66.com is billed as “The Most Mobile Main Street in America.” Businesses are divided into a list of categories for users to select.

It targets those along the path of the Albuquerque Rapid Transit project.

“This is the city’s way of really trying to engage and support those local businesses that all will be challenged during some of the construction periods,” he said.

Tom Willis, owner of the 66 Diner, said he likes the ABQ66.com exposure because it’s a resource many people now turn to on their computers and smartphones.

“That seems to be much more where most people do their research these days is on the Internet and on apps and on their phones than certainly back in my day when we had a phone book,” he said.

“We’re getting a lot of the younger generation just because they realize where here, and they come in to try it,” Willis said, noting that the most popular items are the milkshakes.

The banner and brand of ABQ66.com was conceived by former Disney theme park creative executive Marshall Monroe, who’s an Albuquerque native.
