Albuquerque’s ‘There’s a Better Way’ program spreading across the country

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque’s staple program “There’s a Better Way” to tackle homelessness is spreading across the country.

The program started a year ago. It helps connect panhandlers to the resources they need, including hiring them to clean and do other project across Albuquerque.

Tuesday, Mayor Richard J. Berry says he received a call from the mayor of Chicago saying they are adopting a program based off the Albuquerque one.

“We’re making this announcement in Chicago today,” said Mayor Berry. “I said, listen we have staff that knows it, we have lessons learned from Albuquerque anything, we can share.”

The mayor says Atlanta and Dallas are also looking at a similar program based off Albuquerque. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
