2 dead after wrong-way crash on I-25

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two people died after a fiery crash on I-25. A Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer said reports of a wrong way driver came in at about 11:30 on Saturday night.

The driver was heading south in the northbound lanes of I-25 near mile marker 287. Deputies say two vehicles crashed head-on and the vehicles were on fire as a result.

One man died while deputies were trying to rescue him. The wrong-way driver also died at the scene.

The wrong-way driver was identified as Clara Avina, 44, from Santa Fe. The driver or the other vehicle was identified as Anton Gress, 23.

SFCSO believes alcohol was a factor in the crash.
