Andrew Romero found guilty of killing Rio Rancho Officer Gregg Benner

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – A jury has found the man accused of killing a Rio Rancho police officer guilty.

Officer Gregg Benner. was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Memorial Day 2015.

Andrew Romero has been on trial for two weeks for the murder of Officer Benner. The jury deliberated for three hours before finding it was Romero who gunned him down.

Before the jury was handed the case this afternoon prosecutors argued, DNA and witnesses put Romero there that night and so does their key witness Tabitha Littles, Romero’s girlfriend at the time. The defense argued the only thing the state has is a star witness who is a junkie and liar.

The verdict was a huge relief for Benner’s widow Julie. She cried and hugged family, friends and her husband’s fellow officers after the verdict was read.

Additionally, the jury found that because Romero knowingly killed a police officer, the murder meets the criteria for a capital offense. This means Romero could be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

Sentencing for Romero will be in two weeks. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
