Baby Brianna’s mother released from prison Wednesday

Bill would expand Baby Brianna Law

GRANTS, N.M. (KRQE) – The Las Cruces mother convicted in one of the state’s most horrific child abuse cases has been released from prison after serving about half of her sentence.

In 2003, Stephanie Lopez was convicted and sentenced to 27 years for child neglect for doing nothing to stop the rape and murder of her 5-month-old daughter. “Baby Brianna” had injuries all over her body, including skull fractures and broken ribs, legs and an arm.

Wednesday, Lopez walked out of the women’s prison in Grants after serving less than half of her sentence because of good time. She was able to do that because at the time, negligent child abuse was not considered a serious violent crime, requiring offenders to serve only 50 percent of the sentence if they earn good time. That has since changed to 85 percent.

The Department of Corrections says Lopez will be serving two years supervised parole.

KRQE News 13 is told she will be moving out of state, and arrangements have been made for that state to supervise her.

Brianna’s father and uncle were also convicted. Their expected release dates are 2025 and 2022.
