RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Rio Rancho police are investigating nine reports of car burglaries that happened Saturday night.
They have reason to believe this crime spree may all be related.
Police tell KRQE News 13 the string of car burglaries in the Northern Meadows community of Rio Rancho had several similarities — including the use of tools and the proximity of the residential areas hit. One victim we spoke to over the phone said his semi-automatic gun was stolen from his truck.
Neighbors in Northern Meadows are proud of their normally-quiet Rio Rancho community.
“We let our kids play, We love just going down to the parks, so it’s usually a very safe area,” said Linnea Martinez, a Northern Meadows resident.
But in recent months, car burglaries in the area have residents concerned.
“We actually park our cars inside the garage, just to keep our own cars safe. And I do get a little bit nervous when we do have to park them outside,” said Martinez.
Rio Rancho police said they received reports on Sunday morning of nine cars burglarized throughout the night.
“I know down this road on Shiloh there was a couple cars hit. I know in the middle of the neighborhood there was a couple of cars hit,” said Luis Varona, a Northern Meadows resident.
“Like if you just go down the curve, there was the two or three cars that were broken into,” said Martinez.
Police said the burglaries were similar in nature. The suspects used tools to break into the cars or looked for cars that were unlocked in residential areas. And said vehicle burglaries are not uncommon in this part of Rio Rancho, but the large number of similar incidents happening the same night — is unusual.
Police are still investigating last night’s incidents, and advise residents to lock their car doors and to not leave valuables in the car — a precaution many people are already taking.
“I make sure I don’t leave anything valuable in my car, I don’t leave cash or loose change or anything that I think could be important to me. I bring it inside,” said Varona.
Police said they are not sure if the suspect is an individual or a team or several teams. If you know something that may help in the investigation contact Rio Rancho Police.
