Lobos fall to Rutgers after a hot start

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)- It was another fast start for Bob Davies’ Lobos at Rutgers on Saturday.

The Lobos jumped out to a 21-0 lead over the Scarlet Knights, but they wouldn’t score again until the 4th quarter. Rutgers would answer after a huge Lamar Jordan touchdown with a 78 yard TD pass of their own to end the 1st quarter making the score 21-7 UNM.

The Scarlet Knights went on to score 24 unanswered points from there. The Lobos would cut the Rutgers lead to 6, and in the 4th led by QB Austin Apodaca the Lobos would try and get something going, but then Apodaca was sacked. He went down hard on his throwing shoulder, grabbing his collar bone. He did have to leave the game and there is still no word on how serious the injury is.

That drive would then lead to a punt, which in the ensuing drive the Scarlet Knights would tack on 3 more points on a field goal putting this game even more out of reach. The Lobos still had a chance to redeem themselves with a late comeback, but a missed 32 yard field goal from Jason Sanders sealed the Lobos fate. The final score was 37-28 Rutgers.

The Lobos are now 1-2 heading into their conference schedule. They have their bye week now coming up, but will take on San Jose State in their conference opener on 10/1 at University Stadium. It will be UNM’s Homecoming game with kick off being at 2:00 p.m.
