Desert Sands Motel to be torn down after 3 fires

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Desert Sands Motel in Albuquerque will be coming down but will likely take some time.

The motel has been the site of three fires over the past few months. The first was arson, the other two caused by homeless people sneaking in.

Now the city has ordered the motel to either undergo renovation or demolition.

The city says the owner has been in contact with the city and has hired a company to carry out the demolition.

The challenge is the building’s age. It’s possible there is asbestos inside. Crews will deal with that starting later this month.

Once that is all removed the demolition will begin. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
