Spam contest takes place at State Fair

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Spam lovers got to put their recipes and their taste buds to the test Thursday. The New Mexico State Fair held a spam contest for both kids and adults.

This year’s emphasis was on both sweet and savory dishes, they included everything from spam sandwiches, to Bundt cake with berries and spam.

“It’s one of our biggest draws,” said Barbara Cushman, Home Arts Superintendent. “People love to come to the fair and see what competitors can do with a can of spam.”

The first place winner at this year’s spam contest moves on to the national contest. New Mexico has won that three times in the past four years. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
