ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Officials of the Pueblo of Sandia and Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta say they have reached a mutual understanding allowing balloons to land on parts of the Sandia Pueblo during the Balloon Fiesta.
Parts of of the Pueblo will now be open for “final and necessary landings” during the October 1-9, 2016 event.
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Media Relations Team says the mutual understanding reinforces a goal of both organizations to provide for the safety of balloonists, the public and property.
The mutual understanding will allow final and necessary landings and protocols requiring pilots and chase crew to notify the Pueblo in order to retrieve a landed balloon, according to Balloon Fiesta officials. After a chase crew vehicle is allowed access, only the actual chase vehicle will be allowed.
Officials say intermediate landings, also known as “hops” will not be allowed.
The agreement also requires balloon pilots wishing to fly over the Pueblo to maintain a minimum height of 200 feet above ground level.
