ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Police are still looking for three thieves who stole a van. Meanwhile, the owner is recovering after police say they ran him over when he tried to stop them.
Police spent the day searching for the Dodge van to try and connect any suspects to the crime. It was found Thursday evening in a neighborhood near Unser and Montano. Investigators took their time gather any evidence they could find.
Police are still on the hunt for the three suspects who ran over the man while trying to steal his van in a neighborhood off Griegos near Guadalupe Trail.
KRQE News 13 spoke to a woman who lives in the neighborhood. She says she didn’t see the crime, but saw the man laying on the street in bad condition.
According to the Albuquerque Police Department, the victim was a contractor hired to do some work for a resident at the end of the Compound North Court. That’s when the victim heard his van starting outside the house.
He saw three men inside his van driving away and tried to stop the thieves by chasing after them. Police say he was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
KRQE News 13 spoke to another neighbor caught the tail-end of crime.
“I heard some yelling and I came outside and looked over my courtyard wall and that fraction of a second I saw what looked like a van going this way,” said John Metler, a neighbor. “A man was chasing after them and he stopped, the man stepped out of my viewing area and I heard him say ‘This is an emergency!'”
Other neighbors KRQE News 13 spoke to say they are concerned and feel for the victim.
“I feel so bad for him, so bad for him. You know, knowing that it could happen to just about anybody,” said Mario Sanchez.
Police have not released the victim’s name just yet because they still need to notify his family about what happened.
