New Mexico Open heads into final round

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)- If anyone doubted whether Nicholas Mason would be in a position for a third consecutive New Mexico Open title, they were wrong.

The skilled golfer from Denver, Colorado finds himself with a two stroke lead as the tournament heads into the final day. Mason was also impressive in round two.

He followed his first round 67 with a course record 62. The old mark was held by former Lobo Charlie Beljan. Mason is five shots off the all time tournament scoring record set by Rio Rancho’s Tim Madigan. Madiagan shot 20 under par to take the title in 2011.

The field has been cut from 156 to 52 players in the final round. The are competing for $85,000 in prize money with $14,000 going to the winner. The leaders have a 10:20 a.m. tee time Thursday morning at Sandia Golf Club.
