Community Calendar: Santa Fe Thunder Half Marathon

This half marathon boasts over 1500 runners from over 41 states and seven countries; it is the Santa Fe Thunder Half Marathon.

Global Running Culture is the group organizing this run, and their members are a diverse group of distance runners from all over the world.

Organizers saw an opportunity to organize a ‘destination half marathon’ in Santa Fe, which would attract runners from all over the world.

This annual event funds their non-profit organization which in turn allows them to work on their projects in Northern New Mexico, Copper Canyon Mexico, and in Kenya to help kids get a head start in life.

The Course: The half marathon course is a point-to-point course and the ‘large hill’ (for those who live at sea level: the mountain) is out of the way first which is two miles long with a 300 foot grade which peaks at 7200 feet above sea level. The rest of the course gradually drops 1300 feet until the end of the course, so the lack of up and down hills offsets the altitude.
