ALBUQUERQUE, N.M (KRQE) – A troubled nightclub in downtown Albuquerque is for sale on Craigslist of all places. For nearly $300,000 it could be yours.
KRQE News 13 spoke with the city and neighboring businesses and asked what they hoped for the future of this space; a new restaurant seems to be a popular wish.
For Espresso Fino owner Greg Flores, coffee and people are his passion.
“Travelers coming through town looking for good coffee stop in, we have some great conversations. I play sort of temporary tour guide for them, direct them places, give them highlights,” said Greg Flores.
His coffee shop sits across the street from Lotus Nightclub. However, the two businesses attract a completely different crowd.
“We just existed in entirely different day and night realms. So it hasn’t changed anything here,” said Flores.
The nightclub near Second and Gold is currently listed for sale on Craigslist for $299,000. The city said a new thriving business is welcomed downtown.
“Whatever goes into that venue will be important to the city. It will generate job opportunities,” said Gilbert Montaño, Mayor’s Chief of Staff.
Lotus has not been without its share of violent incidents. The city said it hopes the new tenant will have a positive impact.
“I think it is fair to see we would like to see a family-friendly entertainment venue that would better us entirely with some of the other things going on with our downtown,” said Montaño.
Residents have their own ideas of what they would like to see move in.
“Maybe a restaurant, maybe an art exhibit area because we have plenty of artists in New Mexico,” said Rosalio Baca, an Albuquerque Resident.
Residents and businesses agree, they hope whatever does move in will enhance this unique stretch of Gold Street.
“It’s a good area, a good location. I would hate to see the wrong crowd coming in,” said Baca.
“It’s a break from the harder edge of downtown and that’s the Gold personality,” said Flores.
Mike Barker, of Western States Retail &Investment, the broker representing Lotus Nightclub, said they are in discussion with a few different buyers, but said it may be awhile before the sale is finalized.
Lotus nightclub is currently still open and it is business as usual during the sale process.
