Local Albuquerque park renamed to honor Vietnam War hero

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A neighborhood park has been renamed in honor of a Vietnam War hero.

South Broadway Park is now known as Willie Castillo Park.

Castillo, a marine, earned the Navy Cross for saving lives during a 1969 battle in Vietnam.

Castillo grew up in the South Broadway neighborhood and returned there after the war.

He died of a heart attack two years ago.

Those who knew him remember him as both friendly and humble.

Neighbors lobbied for the neighborhood park there to be renamed in his honor.

Hundreds attended Saturday’s dedication ceremony.
