State Police investigating after officer shoots accused carjacker

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police say they are now investigating after an officer shot a suspected armed robber earlier this month.

William Wilson, 52, is accused of stealing a car at knife point outside San Felipe Casino on Saturday, August 6th, State Police say.

NMSP says Officer Carlos Vigil spotted Wilson driving the stolen car Sunday on I-25 between Santa Fe and Las Vegas. They say Officer Vigil attempted to perform a traffic stop but Wilson fled, resulting in a chase.

After that chase, the officer fired shots hitting Wilson once, according to State Police.

Police say Wilson is expected to survive. A female passenger, 23-year-old Tyler Vargas was also taken into custody.

Wilson is now facing six new charges including resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

NMSP says the sequence of events leading up to the shooting are under investigation. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
