Experts: Heavy backpacks could cause health problems

(CNN) – As you get the kids ready for school Tuesday morning, here’s something to think about — experts say kids who carry heavy backpacks could be at risk of health problems.

Parents say it happens more than they would like because students have a lot of homework or need to bring home extra books to study for tests.

“It puts a tremendous amount of stress, postural stress, gravitational stress on the neck, upper back, shoulders, muscles, joins, so it’s a pretty common problem,” said Dr. Dan Davidson, chiropractor.

Doctors say kids should not carry more than 10 percent of their body weight. They also tell parents to make sure your child’s backpack is balanced and has good padding. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
