Mosque leader, one other shot and killed in Queens

QUEENS, N.Y. (KRQE) – New York City Police are searching for the man who fatally shot the leader of a mosque and his friend as they left afternoon prayers.

Police say 55-year-old Imam Maulama Akonjee and 64-year-old Thara Uddin were fatally shot by someone who approached them from behind, at their mosque in Queens, Saturday afternoon.

“I am deeply sadden to say that a lot of what’s behind this crime and other hate crimes that have happened to American Muslims is the anti-Muslim rhetoric that continues day in and day out within the media,” Dr. Debbie Almontaser, Muslim Community Network said.

Police say they haven’t determined a motive, and that there’s no indication the men were targeted because of their faith. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
