Video: Suspected drunk driver thanks deputy after serious crash

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe police said a couple was caught in a lie after a suspected drunk driving crash. The crash left officers surprised the passengers lived to tell the lie in the first place.

Lapel video from a Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputy shows the aftermath of a nasty rollover on Highway 502 near Los Alamos last month.

“There’s an open bottle, there’s an empty container that fell out,” a Santa Fe police officer showed the arriving deputy at the crash scene.

Investigators said it’s clear this crash was the result of driving drunk.

The couple in the car had already been taken to the hospital when the deputy arrived on scene.

“She told me she was the driver at first,” the officer told the deputy. “She kept holding her right shoulder and I said ‘Hey, you know why that is?’ ‘Cause you were in the passenger seat.'”

Investigators said someone’s head went into the driver’s side windshield, and the boyfriend had a gash in his forehead.

The couple’s car slammed into a rock wall.

Police said Raymond Martinez eventually fessed up to driving the car when it crashed, and admitted to drinking “approximately seven ‘shooters'” of 99 Apples,” before getting behind the wheel.

When the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputy caught up with the suspected drunk driver at the hospital, the deputy showed the human side of these calls.

“I’m still in shock,” Martinez told the deputy.

Before arresting Martinez, the deputy allowed him a moment to himself.

“I’ve never seen that before,” the deputy told him.

The two talked about the crash, and how surprised they both were that he wasn’t killed.

The driver admitted he needs to stop drinking.

“I told her I think it’s God’s calling, like to stop drinking,” Martinez told the deputy.

“You got somebody looking out for you, brother,” the deputy responded.

In the end, the driver thanked the deputy for talking with him before his arrest.

“Honestly, sir, I do appreciate everything you’re doing for me, man I really do, sir,” Martinez told the deputy.

Without being told to, Martinez then placed his hands behind his back for the handcuffs.

Martinez was taken to jail, booked on charges of DWI, careless driving, open container, and no seat belts.

Deputies had Martinez do a blood draw to see how drunk he was. Those results aren’t back yet. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
