Picture shows man driving with baby on his lap

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A KRQE News 13 viewer captured a picture of a man driving with a baby in his lap on Thursday.

The picture was taken around noon, near the intersection of 4th Street NW and Griegos.

“I just think that’s horrible,” said Mayte Portillo.

“That’s crazy,” said Susan Myers.

“I think that’s really ridiculous, a very dangerous thing to do,” said Bob Barreras.

People say they see this kind of thing happens all the time.

“I feel like it’s sad but I’m not surprised,” said Portillo.

“The other day I saw a father and a mother on a moped and the child was standing in the little area where you’re supposed to put your feet. It was like the whole family,” said Barreras.

Myers said, “I’ve seen a lot of people make bad choices.”

There was a similar incident back in June; it shows a woman driving with a baby between her legs.

When APD took a look, they didn’t mince their words.

“It’s stupid, why anyone would do that is beyond comprehension,” said Officer Tanner Tixier of the Albuquerque Police Department.

Many people agree, saying there’s no excuse.

Portillo said, “You’re putting in danger your own child’s life by having them like that, you know. I mean, that’s why I think there’s such a strict enforcement on car seats.”

“They could get car seats from different places, there’s a lot of places that help if you can’t afford it,” said Myers.

People say this is an especially bad move in Albuquerque.

Myers said, “People drive crazy around here.”

Others believe that picture could be a sign of something much worse.

“If you have your child in the front seat I wonder, like people see you, I wonder what you do at home, behind closed doors,” said Portillo.

In the past, APD has said when it comes to incidents like these they can’t do much to the driver, unless they catch them in the act. Even if they do catch them, they’re probably only looking at a ticket for not having the child in a car seat, because child abuse is so hard to prove.

The person who took those pictures did call police to tell them to be on the lookout.
