CARLSBAD N.M. (KRQE) – After an incredibly difficult year, an act of kindness by the community left one New Mexico family completely shocked.
Mikayla Basabilvazo’s life was turned upside-down more than a month ago after her mother, Yvonne, passed away after fighting a long battle with ALS.
“She’s funny and always happy and always put people before her,” said Mikayla.
“You could see in her eyes that spirit, that hope and courage and I think her courage and strength is what I see in my girls now,” said George Basabilvazo, Mikayla’s dad.
Through all the pain the family has gone through recently, one moment over the weekend at the Eddy County Fair brought nothing but smiles and tears of joy to their faces.
All the buyers at the fair pitched in to buy Mikayla’s pig for $18,000, plus an add on of $7,000, making the grand total $25,000.
“I just didn’t think anyone was going to do that,” said Mikayla.
To put that $25,000 into perspective: a grand champion pig at the Eddy County Fair usually goes for about $7,000.
Mikayla’s dad says as the price kept going up, the only word he could use to describe what was happening was “unbelievable.”
“I was sitting there just crying, crossing my hands, praying to God, talking to my wife and thanking her for raising such a wonderful daughter,” he said.
It was Mikayla’s first year showing in the fair. She says she knows her mom was watching over her through it all, and is thankful to those at the auction for all their support.
“Thank you because I’m going to use all the money towards going to college, it will help out a lot,” said Mikayla.
Mikayla wants to go to school to become a dentist.
