Traveling memorial honors fallen Iraq War veterans

Eyes of Freedom

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A national traveling military tribute is honoring a New Mexico soldier killed in the line of duty.

The “Eyes of Freedom” uses 23 life-size portraits to honor all veterans across the country. The artist, Anita Miller, created the pictures as way to help family members and loved ones cope with their tragic loss.

One of the men in the paintings is Jonathan Grant from Pojoaque.

KRQE News 13 spoke with one of his fellow service members, who says he’s thankful for this memorial.

“It means the world to me knowing all these men and having served beside them, knowing their legacy is continuing,” said Mike Strahle.

The project took Miller two and a half years to complete. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
