SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe police said a groper snuck into a teenager’s bathroom in her home Sunday, and fondled her in the shower.
“It’s frightening to think that someone is out there doing this,” a Santa Fe neighbor who didn’t want to be identified told KRQE News 13.
Sunday night in Santa Fe just before 10 p.m., a 19-year-old said she was taking a shower in her home off Juniper Lane when she felt a hand between her legs. When the teen opened her eyes, she said a strange man was in her bathroom.
The woman said she screamed, chased the man out of the house and quickly called police.
“That’s everlasting in her head now and she’s gonna be afraid, and that’s so sad,” the victim’s neighbor told KRQE News 13.
Women around Santa Fe are on high alert.
“I just was taking a shower and I made sure beforehand that all my windows and doors were locked,” the neighbor said. “Even though I do have dogs that would alert me, it still made me afraid.”
This isn’t the first groping incident reported in recent weeks to the Santa Fe Police Department.
Last month, there were three separate cases near homes about two miles away from Sunday’s attack.
“It’s certainly unsettling,” explained Lieutenant Paul Joye, with the Santa Fe Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
In the first report back in June, a Santa Fe woman said she walked in on a man fondling himself in her home. In the second case, a woman said she was cooking dinner in her apartment when a strange man grabbed her waist.
After that, a third woman said she was showering at home when a man reached through an open bathroom window and grabbed her backside.
“Right now there’s some similarities to the other cases that we’ve been working on, but not enough right now to say it’s the same person,” Lieutenant Joye told KRQE News 13.
In each case, the women said they screamed and the intruder ran off.
Police said the woman Sunday didn’t know just how visible her bathroom was from the outside, so it’s good to be aware.
“Know who can see into your house, lock your windows, lock your doors,” said Lt. Joye.
The four women did give some similar descriptions of the pervert. They describe him as a white man, roughly 5′ 8” to 6” tall, about 170-200 pounds, in his 20s or 30s.
Santa Fe police said they have increased patrols. They’re asking the public to call police immediately with any information of strange activity.
The teen on Sunday also said the suspect was wearing black shorts with running shoes and no shirt.
