Brothers drown during outing at New Mexico state park

DEMING, N.M. (AP) — Authorities in New Mexico say two brothers died while on a family outing at a Percha Dam State Park.

The Deming Headlight reports that a New Mexico State Police report says 34-year-old Gabino Porras and 17-year-old Cosme “Cosmito” Romero of Deming drowned while trying to cross a spillway runoff near their campsite.

Witnesses say the brothers fell while crossing and were taken under by a strong current.

The brothers were participating in a Saturday outing that involved 11 family members. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
