VAUGHN, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police are investigating a triple fatal accident that happened early Saturday morning.

State police say they responded to a crash involving two vehicles at about 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The crash was on US 54 near mile marker 215, north of Vaughn.

According to police, their initial investigation shows that a passenger car was heading south on US 54 when it struck a cow that was in the southbound lane. After striking the cow, the car entered the northbound lane and collided head-on with a semi-tractor trailer. Both vehicles then caught on fire.

The driver of the semi was able to exit his vehicle and attempted to help the three passengers of the car, however the passengers of the car were trapped and sustained fatal injuries.

The deceased are identified as driver 26-year-old Guerrero Jimenez, 75-year-old Ofahalea Sanchez, and 3-year-old Angela Jimenez, all from Denver, Colo.
