Isotopes add additional netting for safety

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Isotopes Park will have a new look when the team takes the field for an eight game home stand starting Thursday.

Additional netting has been placed beyond home plate. The netting now extends to the tunnels at the end of each dugout.

Major League Baseball suggested that ball parks add additional netting at the end of the 2015 season. Late during that season, a woman was injured by a foul ball in Boston.

The City of Albuquerque paid about $150,000 to add the netting, the money coming from general obligation bonds.

The Isotopes did ask season ticket holders for their response before the plan was put into action. Fans overwhelmingly thought it was a good idea to add the 40 feet tall 113 feet wide netting.

“With today’s technology, people seem to be looking at their phone sometime a little bit more,” said Department of Municipal Development spokesperson Mark Motsko. “They should be paying attention to the action on the field and this gives them in these areas a little more safety,”

The Isotopes will have super hero night Friday. There will be a pregame parade for all in costume. Those dressing up will also get $9 reserve level tickets for all of the members of their group.
