New Mexico State Police ID officer who fatally shot suspect

HANOVER, N.M. (AP) – Authorities have identified a New Mexico State Police officer who fatally shot a man in Grant County last month.

State Police said Friday that Officer Austin Baca-Ray fired his weapon, striking and killing 29-year-old Josh Herrera in Hanover, a town east of Silver City.

Investigators say Herrera, of Vanadium, took a “deliberately aggressive” stance and pointed a .22 caliber handgun at officers.

He died at the scene.

No one else was injured.

Authorities say Grant County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in response to reports of a gunman, with state police officers assisting deputies with the call.

According to New Mexico State Police, Baca-Ray has been with the department for six months.

The shooting remains under investigation. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
