Unique sculpture mysteriously missing from Albuquerque art gallery

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A unique sculpture is mysteriously missing from an Albuquerque art gallery and no one seems to know who took it or how they did it.

“I’m still kind of in full baffle,” said Carol Cooper.

Cooper’s sculpture known as ‘Sun’ is nowhere to be found.

“I’m really just trying not to panic,” said Cooper.

The artist said the large wire sculpture was part of a series about love.

“It’s two men about to kiss,” said Cooper.

The sculpture was being shown at Downtown Contemporary Gallery near 4th and Central. Somebody noticed it had gone missing Saturday.

“I don’t even know where to go from here,” said Cooper. “I don’t know how someone would’ve stolen it without them knowing.”

Gallery Manager Valerie Hollingsworth said she can’t pin point when it disappeared, but said no one broke in.

She said the doors remain locked and visitation is by appointment only. She said local artists do have work spaces at the gallery, coming in and out as they please.

“There’s all kinds of people that bring people in,” said Hollingsworth. “It’s their responsibility to watch the place.”

Hollingsworth hopes the sculpture was borrowed by an artist.

“Maybe they wanted to draw it or use it as a prop in the background of a shoot or something like that,” said Hollingsworth.

For Cooper, she doesn’t know what to think. One theory though, someone took it because they saw it as controversial.

“It has crossed my mind that it’s like squooshed in an alley somewhere,” said Cooper.

She’s still hoping it’s not gone for good. Because for an artist, she said a part of her would be lost too.

“You can’t really get that back,” said Cooper.

Cooper’s sculpture was priced at more than $3,500.

The gallery is offering a $500 reward for any information leading to the return of the sculpture.
