Courtney Frerichs is on pace to do something big

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Courtney Frerichs always dreamed of going to the Olympics one day.

That dream started with gymnastics, but by the time Frerichs was 14, she knew that gymnastics would not be the sport to get her to the Olympics. She always loved long distance and she also likes obstacles, so the steeplechase was a perfect fit.

One NCAA three thousand Meter Steeplechase title and five All American honors later, Frerichs finds herself closer to the Olympics than ever.

She will be competing at this year’s Olympic Trails in Eugene, Oregon starting July 4. There are three spots are up for grabs. Out of 16 women who have qualified for the trails and achieved the Olympic standard of 9:45, only three have better times than Frerichs.

“I do feel like, yeah, I am capable of reaching my goals because the big one was first trying to get under that 9:30 barrier,” said Frerichs. “Now that I’ve done it twice I consider myself to really be in the mix.”
