Police: Rio Rancho homeowner shoots intruder, suspect in hospital

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – A Rio Rancho homeowner opened fire on an intruder Wednesday morning.

Police say 911 dispatch received a call around 2 a.m. on Wednesday from a home on the 1000 block of Luz Del Sol, saying the homeowner had shot a man who broke into their home. Shortly after that, another call said a man with a gunshot wound had been dropped off at Presbyterian Hospital.

Officers responded to the hospital and found evidence from the burglary scene on the suspect. That suspect was then taken to UNM Hospital where his condition is not known.

An investigation is underway to determine if the homeowner will face charges.
