Albuquerque aquarium crushes seashells for World Oceans Day

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque BioPark is celebrating World Oceans Day by crushing hundreds of seashells.

It’s all in an effort to bring awareness to the consequences of shell trade. Every year, millions of marine mollusks like sea starts and clams are killed to become trinkets for the tourist industry. The¬†BioPark hopes this event will make you think twice before buying a souvenir.

On Wednesday, people gathered at the aquarium to crush the seashells. They were confiscated and donated to the aquarium by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
