Airman honored

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two navy airmen killed in a fiery crash 65 years ago were honored Wednesday. U.S. Navy Lieutenant Charles Dickson and Crew Chief Alson Earl Prior died during a training mission on or very near to what is now the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge.

Details of what happened were unknown until Lieutenant Dickson’s daughters started looking for answers. The women learned the airmen took off from Kirtland Air Force Base in an AJ-1 Savage Attack Bomber for a practice bombing run. The plane caught fire mid-flight.

Bernalillo County Commissioner Art de la Cruz proclaimed June 8th, 2016 as Lieutenant Charles Dickson Day. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
