GALLUP, N.M. (KRQE) – Two men on a road trip documented a strange experience at a Gallup hotel regarding room keys; their video went viral and has been seen by millions.
The video was posted to YouTube by user “Battle Rattle” on Saturday.
It starts off with the person taking the video saying, “So, last night we’re laying in bed and somebody decides just to walk right into our hotel room — room 146, which we’re definitely assigned to.”
According to the video description, the men are headed out to California for some off-roading adventures.
“So we asked the hotel lady why this might have happened and she said ‘Well they gave the other people the master key,'” the man taking the video says.
Then the two guys decide to do some “research,” and realize that their hotel room key also can open any room at the Rodeway Inn.
The video is posted to YouTube, and by Monday night, it had nearly 4 million views.
In the comments section of the video, Choice Hotels, the parent company for Rodeway Inn, wrote “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have contacted the hotel and determined that there was a malfunction in their key system. They have taken immediate action to address this.”
KRQE News 13 also reached out to Choice Hotels. A representative said in a statement:
Following a complete review of this incident, Choice Hotels has terminated the property’s franchise licensing agreement effective immediately. The operator failed to uphold the high standards we place on guest safety and security, which is unacceptable.
We are contacting guests staying at or scheduled to stay at the property to inform them of the situation, offer our sincere apologies and provide any assistance needed.
The video ends with the men saying, “The Rodeway Inn in Gallup, New Mexico.”
“Where everybody has a key to everybody’s room.”
“Where you’re all welcome.”
