APD investigating officer involved shooting that left one dead

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)– Police are currently investigating an officer involved shooting that left one dead in northeast Albuquerque.

The shooting happened near Goodrich and Morningside Saturday night.

APD said that they were dispatched to the location at about 9:30 p.m. in reference to an intoxicated person with a gun. Officers arrived and established contact with 58-year-old Dennis Humphrey who was armed with an unidentified high-powered gun and making threats against officers.

SWAT was called and police negotiated with Humphrey for approximately 30 minutes before he went into his garage and turned out the lights. When officers shined lights into the garage they observed Humphrey pointing his weapon at them, at which point police say at least one officer fired multiple times, hitting Humphrey.

Life-saving procedures were attempted on Humphrey at the scene but he later died at the hospital.

APD says the incident is an ongoing investigation with a multi-jurisdictional investigative team, and three officers are on paid administrative leave.

KRQE will provide details as information becomes available.
