ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A tragic start to the Memorial Day weekend. Three people are dead after a head on collision on a busy highway that was shut down for hours.

One car is a mangled piece of metal after officials say it collided with a truck head on. It happened at about 10:00 Friday morning on U.S. 550.

Sandoval County deputies say one vehicle was traveling northbound and the other southbound when one crossed the center lane causing the collision. Two men and a woman were killed in the crash.

Another person was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. It’s not known which car the victims were in.

U.S. 550 was shut down for about six hours causing a massive backup. The crash and shutdown became such a big deal an emergency alert was sent out just before 11 a.m.

Deputies say all of the victims were wearing their seatbelts and were trapped in the vehicles.

There is no word if speed played a role.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

U.S. 550 has been opened.
