Additional grants sought to cleanup massive tire hoard

Brawl brewing over man's giant tire dump

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE)Crews have removed thousands of tires but it’s just a small dent in the mess. Last month, inmates on community custody removed more than 23,600 tires from the property of A.B. Swanson in the Rio Puerco.

It’s estimated that Swanson has hoarded up to 380,000 tires. The county used a $62,000 grant from the state environment department to begin the removal.

The tires will be shredded and recycled. The county is looking for additional grants to fund the second phase of the cleanup.

The dumpsite is a huge danger – two summers ago, they caught fire.

The county has not ruled out taking Swanson to court to help pay for all this provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
