Samuel Gordon

DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE) – Police are now saying theft played a role in the death of a Durango college student. They’re also saying the suspects wanted to steal the victim’s marijuana.

Samuel Gordon, 20, a student at Fort Lewis College, was shot early Tuesday in what police say was a home invasion.

They say an acquaintance knew Gordon had a lot of marijuana in his apartment and conspired with three others to rob him.

Detectives say the four came into Gordon’s apartment, wearing bandanas on their faces and armed with guns, and took Gordon and four others hostage. They say the suspects tied them up with zip ties and ordered them to lie face down.

At some point Gordon was shot and later died.

The four suspects were caught fleeing the scene and charged with first degree murder, kidnapping and aggravated robbery.

They’re all from the Phoenix area. One is a former student at Fort Lewis College.
